Seeking expert opinion to overcome the challenge, Subhalaxmi Pet approached Mobils Field Engineering Services (FES) team. Following a thorough study of the application and maintenance practices, Mobil’s FES team recommended a switch to Mobil DTE 26 Ultra hydraulic oil for the injection molding machine. With this transition, over time, Subhalaxmi Pet was able to observe benefits in extended oil drain interval by three times which further reduced the frequency of oil changes and associated maintenance activities. The use of Mobil DTE 26 Ultra also resulted in extended lifespan for oil filters that minimised the need for frequent replacements. With enhanced equipment reliability and reduced downtime, Subhalaxmi Pet experienced increased productivity that optimised their manufacturing output. This also resulted in reduction in machine downtime by six hours, allowing for an incresed efficiency in operations.

By reducing the oil drain frequency, Subhalaxmi Pet also contained negative environmental fallouts by registering a decrease in oil usage by 804 litres. The enhanced equipment reliability and reduced maintenance needs led to a revenue improvement of INR 1,20,832 that optimised the overall operational costs. The successful implementation of Mobil DTE 26 Ultra hydraulic oil at Subhalaxmi Pet demonstrates the positive impact of utilising advanced lubrication solutions as developed by Mobil and how, Mobil is assisting businesses in overcoming operational challenges and adopting top notch lubrication practices. SABIC and SINOPEC Announce Commercial Operation of PC Plant at Join Venture SSTPC

SABIC and SINOPEC announced the commercial operation of a new polycarbonate (PC) plant at their 50-50 joint venture (JV) – SINOPEC SABIC Tianjin Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SSTPC). Khalid Hashim Al-Dabbagh, SABIC Chairman and Ma Yongsheng, SINOPEC Chairman attended the ceremony.

Established in 2009, SSTPC is a mega-size petrochemical complex that already consists of nine world-scale production plants producing chemicals, polyethylene, and polypropylene. With an annual designed capacity of 260 kT, the new PC plant is a vital component of SABIC’s PC growth strategy in China, allowing for further collaborations with global and local customers. The development of the PC plant marks the next chapter of the JV and strengthens the partners’ capability to meet regional PC market demands.Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, SABIC CEO said, “By working in partnership, SABIC and SINOPEC are unlocking significant and mutual growth opportunities that complement the national agendas of Saudi Arabia and China. Building on our position as one of the world’s leading polycarbonate manufacturers, our first-ever PC plant in Asia underlines our commitment to operate and manufacture in markets that are close to our customers to increase service capabilities, agility, and supply reliability.”

The availability of SABIC’s polycarbonate will primarily be for customers in the Greater China region, targeting major PC-related industries such as Electricals & Electronics, Consumer Goods & Appliances, automotive, healthcare products and Building and Construction applications. SABIC’s portfolio of PC materials produced at SSTPC will be marketed under its LEXAN ™ resin brand.

Ma Yongsheng, Chairman of SINOPEC said, “SINOPEC consistently strives to propel the development of SSTPC and facilitate China-Saudi petrochemical cooperation. Polycarbonate is a transparent, high-impact, and strong yet lightweight material, used widely in automotive parts, home appliances, medical products, and many everyday products. Future demand for polycarbonate and other engineering plastics is expected to grow in China, to support the increasing production of electronics, automotive, information technology and building materials.

SSTPC has served as the epitome of close China-Saudi economic ties. In 2016 and 2017, during King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and Xi Jinping, President of China’s mutual visits, SABIC and SINOPEC signed a series of memorandums of cooperation under the patronage of the leaders of two countries, with the polycarbonate plant’s joint construction being underlined as one of the most important projects.

International profile and comprehensive content of the main exhibition and side events at the major exhibitions dedicated to the plastics and rubber industry

Taking place from 5 to 8 September in the halls of Fiera Milano in Rho, PLAST 2023 is the main international event for an industry that has a significant presence in all markets, constantly dedicated to the research and development of innovative solutions for technology, sustainability, and new materials. Exhibitors and visitors will also find a rich array of side events, conferences, and networking opportunities with a strong focus on innovation, the circular economy, sustainability, and energy savings – the guiding themes of the fair.

The exhibitions in figures

One thousand three hundred exhibitors occupying fifty thousand square metres of exhibition space will create a veritable citadel of innovation wholly dedicated to the plastics and rubber industry, which is an important presence in the lives of people and the operations of businesses, with a focus on innovation processes guided by the concept of sustainability. The entire industry is focused on developing innovative, sustainable solutions that will conserve the extraordinary performance of articles made with plastics and/or rubber.

The exhibitions will witness significant international participation with over fifty nationalities represented among the exhibitors; roughly half are Italian (54%) and the rest from other countries (46%). This balance testifies both to the attractiveness of the event in the eyes of major international players and to the stature of the Italian plastics and rubber industry, one of Europe’s foremost.

A dynamic market

Based on the third edition of the National Survey presented at the recent Amaplast assembly, the MECS-Amaplast Statistical Studies Centre has outlined an extremely positive snapshot of the plastics and rubber technology sector, which ended the year with a turnover of 4.35 billion euros, representing an 8.1% increase over 2021, placing 2022 as the second-best year ever. The main factor in this historic result is exports, which showed a particularly positive trend toward the end of the year, with a total value of 3.16 billion euros, above the psychological threshold of 3 billion and recording an 8.5% gain over the previous year.

Focusing on Italian manufacturers, exports – which represent 72.7% of production – show sustained growth toward the principal geographical markets: EU (+8%), North America (+6.6%), extra-EU Europe (+8%), and the Far East (+9%). The general categories of exported machinery have extrusion systems at 20.8% of total turnover for Italian manufacturers (up 13.7% over 2021), followed by auxiliaries (+13.7%), injection systems (+9.5%), and other machinery (+24.2%).

Positive signals were also received from the Italian domestic market, which grew by 6.8% with respect to 2021 with turnover exceeding 1.18 billion euros. The top three client industries were packaging (40.6% of total turnover), automotive (15.9%), and construction (11%).

Government, industry, and economic representatives on the guest roster for the opening of the Milanese fair

PLAST 2023, international exhibition for the plastics and rubber industry, is scheduled from 5 to 8 September at the Fiera Milano fairgrounds in Rho.

Expectations are high for the opening event, which will include an inaugural conference and the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The opening will be characterized by quality content and the presence of prominent political and institutional stakeholders, confirming the stature of the plastics and rubber market in the national economy. The event is promoted by The Innovation Alliance, a project combining five international fairs — PLAST, IPACK-IMA, MEAT-TECH, PRINT4ALL, and INTRALOGISTICA ITALIA — that are all showcases of excellence for machinery, technology, and materials for the manufacturing industry.

On 5 September from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, the inaugural conference titled “Sustainability 5.0 for plastic: scenarios and developments from production to end-of-lifecycle” in Sala Martini of the Centro Congressi will feature the speakers Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, who will give the opening address, and Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister of Business and the Made in Italy, who will deliver concluding thoughts based on the roundtable starting at 10:30 AM and coordinated by the Vice Director of TG5, Giuseppe De Filippi.

Protagonists of the event include:

Governmental representatives and business community leaders at the opening of PLAST 2023

Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, and Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister of Business and the Made in Italy, took part in the inaugural conference of PLAST, an international exhibition dedicated to the plastics and rubber industry.

Titled Sustainability 5.0 of plastic: scenarios and developments from production to end-of-lifecycle, the opening conference included a roundtable featuring prominent names in industry, such as Alessandra Colombo, Head of Circular Economy and Sustainability for Versalis, a chemical company in the Eni group focusing on sustainable and circular chemicals to create stakeholder value and contribute to the energy transition; Cristina Miele, Administrative and Financial Director and Manager of Ferrarelle Società Benefit, fourth Italian mineral water group by volume; Nico Fontana, Managing Director of Montecolino, a textile flooring and wall-covering company, and Mario Bagna, Managing Director of Interzero Italy, key circular economy partner for companies in any industry seeking to develop integrated environmental solutions.

The two governmental representatives underscored the desire of institutions to support business and workers to create ideal conditions for increasing competitiveness on the global market. The capital equipment industry is a showpiece of the Italian economy and an international market leader. In 2022 the turnover for the industry was 55.4 billion euros, a 10.7% increase over 2021 and a new record. The outlook for 2023 is again positive: turnover is projected to rise to 57.7 billion euros, +4.1% with respect to 2022 (source: Federmacchine).

“In Italy the issue is not that of eliminating plastic, a material with well known properties and usefulness. This is something that the fair communicates excellently” stated Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security. “The goal instead is to create an instrument that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastics in order to protect the environment and human health. The objective is to eliminate plastic pollution, which is unquestionably a serious problem for our ecosystems. Once again, we need to be guided by science, not ideology. The technology on such prominent display here at the fair is continually developing and we have to help it keep pace with our heightened concern for the environment and the inevitable process of ecological transition. In this, the operators in the plastics value chain must certainly take a leadership role. And also, as a nation, we have to seize the opportunities that certain strongly interdisciplinary industries and value chains offer in the realm of bioeconomics and the circular economy.”

“PLAST is a high profile European event for the plastics industry. With turnover of 25 billion euros, 70% of which from sales abroad, this industry represents a showpiece for the Made in Italy,” stated Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister of Business and the Made in Italy. “The plastics value chain continues to push the frontiers of innovation and is fundamental for the ecological transition, one of the big objectives in Italy and Europe. Measures such as the industrial property code and the “Made in Italy bill ensure businesses an environment conducive to investment and to protecting Italian excellence in the world. With these and other provisions, the government guarantees and will continue to guarantee its support for industry.”

The event was organized by The Innovation Alliance, a project uniting five international trade fairs into a cohesive system, all showcases of excellence in the production of machinery, technologies, and materials for the manufacturing industry: PLAST, exhibition of the plastics and rubber industry; IPACK-IMA, leader in processing and packaging technologies for foods and non-foods; MEAT-TECH specialized in the processing and packaging of traditional and alternative protein sources; PRINT4ALL, a point of reference for the entire global community of converting, package printing, labelling, and commercial and industrial printing; INTRALOGISTICA ITALIA, dedicated to solutions and automated systems for industrial handling, warehouse management, and materials stocking, sorting, and lifting.

The Innovation Alliance – established in 2018 with a system approach to enhance time-to-market and offer opportunities for comprehensive thinking about related production sectors and develop the sustainability of new materials and research & development to boost global competitivity – returns in 2023 with an event addressing one of the trends that is revolutionizing both industry and society.

Talking about sustainable growth of the plastics industry within a circular economic system enjoying strong support from the government is thus the leitmotif for this opening event: plastic thus becomes the object of the new green concept being developed by companies in the industry.

PLAST 2023: 3D Printing Satellite Fair

Between start-ups and innovative projects, an entire exhibition area dedicated to one of the technologies of the future

PLAST 2023, scheduled from 5 to 8 September in the halls of Fiera Milano in Rho, is an opportunity to get an up-close look at the most innovative technological proposals addressed to the plastics and rubber market. Of particular note among the large variety of satellite- shows is 3D PLAST, an exhibition space dedicated to additive manufacturing and 3D printing, rapid prototyping, modelling software, and related technologies.

The large exhibition area of the satellite fair is divided into two sections: an island for conferences on 3D printing and rapid prototyping; and a demonstration area where visitors can get a hands-on experience of the new technology on display. One of the very interesting displays is a sui generis 3D printing application using a humanoid robot equipped with an extruder to build a bicycle. It is an experimental project that gives a nod to contemporary lifestyles, soft mobility, sustainability, and other current themes such as electric mobility. In the upcoming years, the bicycle industry is expected to grow constantly in response to consumer demand guided by the need to protect the environment, reduce urban traffic, and adopt greener lifestyles. As a demonstration of the potentials of extrusion technology integrated with 3D printing, three different bicycles will be produced during the fair, each with a different material: thermoplastic, reinforced thermosetting resin, and plastic sheet.

The protagonists of the innovative project are businesses and start-ups: Indexlab, MOI, ISINNOVA, eXgineering, Gimac, they demonstrating how 3D additive technology makes it possible to envision artisanal products and adapt them to industrial production, applicable also to the most classic designs, such as a bicycle.

“We believe this is a very interesting example of how technology combined with innovation can also move towards environmental sustainability and the transformation of an artisanal product into an industrial process,” stated Mario Maggiani, Managing Director of Promaplast, the PLAST organizing company.

He is echoed by Fabrizio Vanzan, Exhibition Office Director for Promaplast, who adds, “3D printing is a highly relevant current technology. We read articles every day in specialized magazines and newspapers regarding products made using this technique and its potentials. So we can only be pleased to host a section in PLAST dedicated to this topic, and there will also be a conference on additive manufacturing titled “Thinking Additive – How additive thinking, communication, and approach condition industrial production”. It has been organized to familiarize people with the technology and illustrate the potentials of the sector to all, and most importantly, how it can influence processing technologies of currently existing plastics.”

Circularity, sustainability, and energy savings are some of the guiding themes at PLAST 2023, taking place from 5 to 8 September in the halls of Fiera Milano in Rho. The green economy is a theme that is applicable to the entire plastics and rubber industry and generates a strong push toward innovation and the search for new production paradigms with a central focus on emissions reduction and environmental protection.

An exclusive service for exhibitors: assessment of carbon footprint

As part of its effort to promote sustainability – a theme guiding the entire industry – and with the consolidated tradition of Fiera Milano behind it, PLAST provides exhibitors a service for calculating the carbon footprint of their organization. Fiera Milano has long been committed to reducing its environmental impact and CO2 emissions generated by events in its facilities by optimizing logistical operations, properly managing wastes, and adopting sustainable food-service practices in keeping with the PLAST philosophy, which is shared with all exhibitors.

Working in collaboration with the specialized company Ambiente Consulenza & Ingegneria, Amaplast supports and guides exhibiting companies wishing to calculate their carbon footprint according to standards developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which operates under the aegis of the United Nations, applying internationally recognized protocols (GHG Protocol and ISO 14064). Assessment of the Carbon Footprint of Organization is one of the most immediate and generally accepted methods for representing and communicating the environmental impact of an enterprise. Amaplast has also undertaken this process for its own internal operations and will share the initial results during PLAST 2023.

Sustainability at the fair: the French collective

Making its first appearance at PLAST this year, the French collective, composed of 24 businesses, boasts a significant number of projects directly related to sustainability with a particular focus on new, bio-based, compostable, or recycled materials. Sponsored by “French Fab”, which brings together the industrial ecosystem across France, the group will present, among the many novelties, CABAMIX by the JM Polymers Group, which proposes its new CARBOMAX PHOENIX range of 100% bio-based, compostable, or recycled plastics; NATUREPLAST with new bioplastics obtained from food industry scrap or by-products (cereals, shellfish, algae, etc.); the two start-ups POLYTOPOLY, specialized in research, analysis, and sales of recycled plastics via a digital platform, and HOLIMAKER, which will exhibit a French-made manual injection press for plastics that is unlike any other in Europe. Known as the HoliPress, it offers injection moulding of nearly industrial quality at reduced costs using 3D moulds and offering options for recycling.

The future of the plastics and rubber industry will be in Milan from 5 to 8 September in an event currently boasting 1300 registered exhibitors and ready to host official buyer delegations from 34 countries.
