Asahi Kasei and Mitsui to Establish Supply and Procurement Systems for Bio-Methanol

Asahi Kasei and Mitsui to Establish Supply and Procurement Systems for Bio-Methanol

Asahi Kasei Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. will establish a supply and procurement scheme for bio-methanol produced in the United States. Through this scheme, Asahi Kasei plans to use the bio-methanol procured from Mitsui to produce in Japan engineering plastics with a lower carbon footprint than existing products.

Today, companies in Japan are increasingly stepping up their efforts to reduce GHG emissions throughout their product supply chains, including raw material-derived greenhouse gases, known as Scope 3 emissions, in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, as advocated by the Japanese government. In this context, Asahi Kasei is working to reduce GHG emissions by manufacturing various engineering plastics, such as TENACTM, a polyacetal (POM) resin, using biomass-based materials with low GHG emissions. Asahi Kasei and Mitsui are working together to find solutions to various issues related to material procurement.

In the United States, Mitsui procures RNG (renewable natural gas) generated from municipal waste landfills in the form of biogas and uses it in the mass balance approach*2 to produce bio-methanol at Fairway Methanol, a local joint venture. Asahi Kasei and Mitsui have acquired the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS certification) for their supply chains in order to prove the raw material’s sustainability features for use in final products.

This will enable Asahi Kasei to procure bio-methanol manufactured by Mitsui, and to sell various types of engineering plastics which contain the correct amount of biomass raw material allocated under the mass balance approach.

The Asahi Kasei Group aims to contribute to a carbon-neutral and sustainable world under its slogan of “Care for Earth” by focusing on initiatives such as the use of biomass raw materials, recycled raw materials, and renewable energy. The company strives to meet the expectations of its customers and society by further advancing the provision of products and services with such sustainable characteristics while deepening collaboration with other companies based on its medium-term management plan for fiscal 2024, under the theme of “Be a Trailblazer”.

Mitsui is striving to reduce the Scope 3 GHG emissions of its customers by using the expertise, knowledge, and products of a variety of its businesses, including the provision of low-carbon methanol, such as bio-methanol, and to contribute to the sustainable development of all society.

Efficient Single Nozzle With Excellent Price-to-Performance Ratio

Efficient Single Nozzle With Excellent Price-to-Performance Ratio

The Single Shot H6300/… offers the best price-to-performance ratio in the field of single nozzles and boasts optimum temperature control. The extension to the range with hardened nozzle tips and Single-hole and Hot Tip Torpedo – as are also used with the Vario Shot – increases the application possibilities of this nozzle many times over.

The Single Shot comes in two sizes and is suitable for the production of small and medium-sized injection mouldings with a shot weight of up to 800 g and immersion depths of over 170 mm.

Maximum flexibility

The interchangeability of the relevant wear parts, including tips and melt chambers and also the thermocouple, facilitates servicing and maintenance. The heating unit, which is connected to the body of the nozzle with just one control circuit, guarantees a uniform temperature over the full length of the nozzle.

Because of the suitably adapted heating-capacity distribution and the gentle conveyance of the melt through generously-dimensioned flow channels, a homogeneous temperature profile and low-shear mould filling are ensured. Through the optimised position of the thermocouple and the efficient insulation from the mould, plastics with a more limited temperature range can also be reliably processed.

Compact design

The aims pursued when developing the nozzle were to achieve the largest possible melt throughput plus a compact design and maximum stability. The construction with only one control circuit reduces the time required for design. In connection with the focus on good insulation from the mould, the energy requirement for the Single Shot during use is particularly low.

Best price-to-performance ratio

The Single Shot nozzle offers the best price-to-performance ratio in the field of single nozzles, but users do not have to dispense with a variety of injection options. A range of torpedoes and screw-on melt chamber variants are, for example, available. In addition to the classical pin gate, these also permit the nozzle geometry to be readily introduced into the cavity plate and, in the event of wear, allow rapid restoration of the gate quality. Extended melt chambers are available for gates to free-form surfaces or sub-runners with a sprue.

The new Facility, which came online in April 2023, is engaged in the prototyping and medium-scale production of advanced polymers and their composites. In the first-phase production line, Toyochem plans to manufacture condensation polymers that exhibit high heat resistance and high flexibility, properties needed to fulfill the very demanding requirements of today’s semiconductor components. Key applications include high heat resistant and flexible adhesive materials for high-speed communication components and functional adhesives for electric vehicles.

In line with its growth strategy, Toyochem, with the cooperation of its Polymer Materials Research Institute in Japan and the new Polymer Pilot Facility, is expected to accelerate development of new products and related businesses needed to support its customer base now and well into the future. “The Toyo Ink Group has a long track record of manufacturing polymers based on acrylics, urethanes, polyesters and their composites for use primarily in can coatings, adhesives, laminating adhesives and inks,” said Yasushi Ariyoshi, Division Director of the Polymer & Coating R&D Division at Toyochem.

“Over the years, the Group has reinforced our capability and technological base to engineer our own polymer-based systems. Recently, Toyochem has been focusing its efforts on developing a series of high-functional products, including environmentally friendly types and performance coatings for the electronics field. These applications require improved properties to satisfy the most demanding requirements. And the establishment of a new pilot facility bolsters our ability to develop and deliver new polymer grades needed to meet the future performance and sustainability demands of our customers.”

In addition to serving as a model system for the trial production of new polymers, Toyochem’s Polymer Pilot Facility is also being used to consolidate polymer pilot areas at Kawagoe and to accumulate data needed to enhance smart-factory initiatives incorporated at its manufacturing sites.
